An excellent day. Dropped off 1kn south of Kinlochewe, we folowed the path up the Allt a' Chuirn towards Creag Dubh. This first top (under 3000ft) was acheived after 2 hours, folowing a scree scramble form the head of the valley. By now the early mist had cleared, leaving the whole ridge, and surrounding hills, in a clear blue sky. From Creag Dubh, a 40 minute scramble along the ridge, passing the "black carls" on their east side, led to the first Munro top of the day, Sgurr nan Fhir Dhuibhe. The next 3 hours was an exhilirating ridge walk over rough summits, with superb views left and right (south and north) as far as Coinneah Mhor, wherre the ridge splits into two branches, encircling the massive Coire Mhic Fhearchair. Just beyond this summit, we examined the remains of a crashed light aircraft. Midway along the ridge, we noticed a sudden change in rock type from the grey/white rocks of the eastern end to the red Torridonian sandstone at the west. From Coinneach Mhor, wetook the northern branch of the ridge, down to the col and then a long slope upwards to the highest summit, Ruadh -stac Mor at 1010m. returning to the col, we dropped down into the majestic Corrie, and lingered by the lochan, colling our heot and tired feet, while gazing up at the massive Tripple Buttress at the head of the corrie. A good stalkers path arounf the northern cliffs of Sial Mhor led us back to the carpark in 2 hours, where our car driver (Dad) was waiting for us. |
