This was the first Munro I climbed alone, and I enjoyed the experience! Starting from the B8035 road on the shores of loch Scridain, I walked up Gleann Dubh (no path), eventaully gaining the col between Ben More and A' Chioch. From there, a rough and steep scramble led directly to the sunnit of Ben More. Retracing my steps to the col, I continued along the fine ridge to A' Chioch, then to Beinn Fhada. Descent along the NW ridge, with superb views out to the sea, back to the roadside by Loch na Keal.

Second Ascent

Date: 18/7/93

Tops and Munros

Companions: with Iain and Anne

  • Ben More (M) 966m

Distance: 6km

Climbing: 950m

Time: 3 hours up, 1.5 hours down

Weather: hot and sunny

Munro Tally: M9, T12

A hot Sunday afterrnoon, after a week of rain. After chuch in the morning at Salen, we decided to postpone Sunday lunch in favour of climbing Ben More! This was Iain's first Munro (aged 10) - not counting being carried up Stuchd an Lochain in a rucsac as a toddler!

It was a gruelling slog up the steep north shoulder form Diseig, and we were gald to get to the top. Once again, the views to the west were superb, but becoming hazy. Staggered back down by the same route, and enjoyed a late Sunday lunch!

This sketch map shows my route in 1978, including the traverse of A' Chioch and Beinn Fhada. The 1993 ascent was directly up and then back down the north ridge.
