Our third day of a weekend based at the bunkhouse at Laggan. We had had two good days on Geal Charn (Monadhliath) and the Beinn a'Chlachair group, so Meall Chuaich sounded like a good "on the way home" hill, and so it proved.

We parked the car at the side of the A9 at Cuaich cottage road-end. Our companion, Timo, decided he would rather sit and read in the car, so Iain and I set off together. From the road, a broad track took us to the side of the aqueduct which carried water from the Allt Cuaich to Dalwhinnie. We followed the north side of this as far as the power staion and dam, then crossed to the track on the south side up to the outflow from Loch Cuaich. This 4 km walk could easily have been shorttened if we had had our bikes with us. Afterr a rest outside the botby, we set out to tackle the steep SW ridge of Meall Chuaich. The going was mostly OK with some boggy and eroded sections. At around 800m, the ridge levelled slightly towards the east, and then we continued up the final rough summit dome of the hill. On its flat summit, we found 2 large cairns - maybe it was difficult to decide where the true summit was.

Descending by the same route, we were glad to get on to lower ground and shelter form the strong eastely wind on the summit. Two and a half hours up, one and a half back down. An easy hill, with the views unfortunately spoilt by the hazy atmosphere.
