Computer Systems

The hardest questions are often those about Computer Systems - that's where you need to know your jargon. Computer Systems includes hardware (input, storage and output devices), low level machine (how data is stored), operating systems and translator programs.

You should be able to state what each of these abbreviations stands for, and write a sentence about what it means:

ASCII, ALU, CAD, CAM, CD-ROM, CPU, DTP, EFT, EPOS, GIGO, GUI, HCI, HTML, LAN, LCD, MICR, OCR, POS, RAM, ROM, RTF, TFT, VDU, WAN, WIMP and WWW.

Check that you can separate the meanings of these confusing pairs (or triplets):

validation and verification

compiler and interpreter

RAM and ROM

CD-ROM, CD-R and CD-RW

sequential and direct access

LAN and WAN

A-to-D and D-to-A conversion

on-line and off-line

WWW and the Internet

analogue and digital

data and information

How wide is you knowledge of computer hardware? See if you can list (and give an example use for) ....

* 10 input devices

* 3 types of printer

* 3 types of display

* 10 storage devices
