Computing Revision
Revision notes for Scottish Higher, Intermediate and Standard Grade Computing
Standard Grade Computing Studies
The Foundation paper lasts 1 hour, but you're probably sitting General (1 hour 15 minutes) then Credit (1 hour 45 minutes). Your Practical Abilities grade has already been submitted by your teacher, and it is worth 40% of the total, so you're almost half way already. The exam tests your ability to recall and apply straightforward facts about Computing. There is no choice - you answer all the questions.
What do you need to know?
First the good news: there are NO questions about the programming language you used in class! The only things you might be asked about programming are the differences between high level languages and low level languages, and, for Credit, the differences between compilers and interpreters.
There will probably be 3 or 4 questions about General Purpose Packages - Word Processing, Databases, Spreadsheets, Graphics, DTP. Presentation and Multimedia packages, Web Creation packages and Expert Systems.
There will be a question about Industrial Applications, one about Commercial Applications, and one or two about Computer Systems (including Networking). Look at some past papers to get the idea (but note that the syllabus content changed in 1994, and again in 2006). In the General paper, the questions are usually in the order given above, while at Credit, the order varies and questions often cover more than one topic.
For Foundation and General, you write your answers in the spaces provided on the exam paper. At Credit, answers are written in a separate answer booklet, so it is important to look at the number of marks for each question, so that you know how much to write.
