Dornie and Eilan Donan from Totaig, on the other side of Loch Duich

A week in Dornie, in Wester Ross, Scottish Highlands. We stayed in a self-catering cottage called Tighe Mo Cridhe, which was excellent. Beautiful situation beside the loch, comfortable and warm - strongly recommended - contact Karin Bryce 01506 872063 for more details. We walked over the hills to see the spectacular Falls of Glomach, visited Eilan Donan Castle, Kyle of Lochalsh, Plockton and Glenelg. Iain and I climbed the Five Sisters of Kintail - mostly in mist, but it cleared dramatically in the afternoon and we had the good fortune to see a Brocken Spectre. On the final day we all became Broch Inspectors (no connection!) at Totaig.

Total Eclipse of the sun, August 11th, 1999, Stuttgart

A major expedition this summer, through Germany and France, and finishing up in Stuttgart to view the total eclipse of the sun. Visited friends (Albrecht family) in the lovely old German town of Goslar in the Harz mountains, then south to stay with the Dengler family in Wilhelmsdorf, near the Bodesee. Then we stayed 2 weeks in the French Alps - see photos above. Our first week was in a gite in St.Nicolas de Veroce, a typical alpine village with views across to Mont Blanc. The highlight of our stay there was a trip up the Aiguille du Midi by cable car. The next week was in another gite near Annecy. It was hot, and we were glad of thenLake to cool us down each evening. Iain and I climbed La Tournette, a very rocky mountain at the head of the lake - a wonderful day - superb views and exhilirating scrambles. Returning to Germany, we relaxed in our friends' hausle (log cabin0 in the Schwarzwald (Black Forest) near Freudenstadt. Visits included the beautiful town of Schiltach, ful of half-timbered houses. Finally to Stuttgart. We were well equipped to view the eclipse ( an ambition of mine since boyhood) along with thousands of others in central Stuttgart. Unfortunately it was cloudy, so we couldn't see the most spectacular effects, but it was well worth being there for the few minutes of darkness at noon.
