An "on the way home" climb - having joined colleague John Reed climbing The Saddle (his last Munro) the day before. The walk begins up the forest road from the side of Loch Laggan, then striking up through the forest to come out on to open hillside, with faint paths only. A steady plod led up the steep ridge towards the south summit. Once into the cloud at around 800m, a compass bearing was required as the ridge was so ill-defined. The top soon loomed out of the cloud, then it was an easy walk along the level summit plateau to the actual summit and the north top. The only conceivable reason for according each of these "top" status, is that it is not clear that one is higher than another. Unfortunately, the cloud obscured the views into the eastern corries and across to Creag Meagaidh. An easy slope led down to the boggy pass between Beinn a' Chaorainn and Beinn Teallach, then a short climb between rocky outcrops to its summit. A nice enough top, notable as being the "lowest equal" Munro (not even 3000ft on the older maps). A broad grassy ridge to the south made losing height painless. Thi sled back to the valley, then into the forest and back to the car by the same forest road. |
